VTT is an impartial multidisciplinary expert organisation. VTT creates new, globally competitive technologies and innovations by combining knowledge and expertise in different fields. It provides research, development, testing and information services to public sector and companies as well as international organisations. VTT´s areas of technological focus are applied materials, bio- and chemistry processes, energy, information and communication technologies, industrial systems management, microtechnologies and electronics, and technology in the community. VTT is Finland’s main R&D service provider with approx. 3100 staff working in various technical fields. For this initiative, VTT has relevant expertise in roll-to-roll (R2R) fabrication technologies for printed electronics, where multi-material micro-manufacture is essential.

The printed electronic devices in itself, being 3D structures of materials vastly varying in functionalities and dimensions, are examples of such concepts. More concretely, the fabrication of master tools (commonly known as shims) to be wrapped around a roller in a R2R printing equipment and is a good example how VTT uses the technology relevant to 4M network. These shims, having very small dimensions over a very large area used in the R2R based processing, are used in roll-to-roll nanoimprinting (NIL) e.g. as a part of thin film transistor fabrication process. Using NIL is a promising way of downscaling the critical dimensions of the transistors and enhancing the performance of the device.
